Research Topic and Significance

The primary focus of this PhD project is the microbial mining of rare earth elements.

Rare earth elements are indispensable for manufacturing wind turbines, electric vehicles, smartphones, and other high-tech devices.

Yet, their extraction through traditional methods poses severe environmental risks, including habitat destruction, water pollution, and high carbon emissions.

By leveraging the natural abilities of microbes to extract and recover REEs from both primary ores and secondary sources such as electronic waste and mine tailings, we aim to develop sustainable, eco-friendly mining practices.

Candidate Profile

Ideal applicants will have:

  • A strong academic background in chemical or biological engineering, microbiology, or a related discipline
  • Practical experience in microbial culturing
  • Hands-on skills in recombinant DNA techniques (such as cloning, transformation, and plasmid construction)
