The Theatre Bars Supervisor/Duty Manager role at Sydney Opera House is a senior position responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of all theatre bars during performance periods.

This involves working closely with senior management to ensure seamless bar service, high team performance, and premium guest experiences across multiple venues.

The successful candidate will be confident in managing high-volume, fast-paced service while upholding world-class hospitality standards.

They will lead teams during shows, execute service, manage compliance, and act as the senior decision-maker when deputising for management.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Oversee the setup, operation, and pack-down of multiple theatre bars during show periods.
  2. Act as the shift lead or duty manager on the floor, supervising bar teams and ensuring a smooth service flow.
  3. Coordinate with FOH and events teams to deliver seamless pre-show, interval, and post-show service.
  4. Manage staffing and section allocations across multiple venues based on show requirements.
  5. Ensure prompt opening and closing of bars in accordance with show call times.

Team Supervision:

  • Lead by example on the floor, maintaining a visible and active presence.
  • Coach, support, and motivate bar staff to achieve performance, presentation, and service standards.
  • Support training and onboarding of new team members.
  • Handle on-shift resourcing adjustments as needed (breaks, rotations, sick cover).

Guest Experience:

  • Deliver an exceptional guest service experience reflective of the organisation's brand.
  • Respond quickly and professionally to guest feedback or service recovery situations.
  • Ensure product knowledge and service etiquette is consistent across the team.

Duty Management & Compliance:

  • Assume operational responsibility for theatre bars and associated guest areas when rostered as Duty Manager.
  • Conduct pre-shift briefings, compliance checks, and incident reporting.
  • Maintain RSA compliance and intervene confidently in any alcohol-related matters.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • A minimum 2–3 years in a high-volume hospitality role, with at least 1 year in a supervisory or leadership capacity.
  • Strong operational knowledge of bar service, cash handling, and POS systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage service in a time-sensitive, high-pressure environment.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Confidence making decisions independently while knowing when to escalate.
  • Exceptional grooming, presentation, and a professional demeanour.
