At The Law Society of NSW, we are seeking a highly skilled Strategic Policy Advisor to lead our advocacy efforts and provide high-level legal policy advice.

About the Role

The successful candidate will manage our Policy and Practice Department, ensuring the provision of timely and accurate policy advice to senior leaders. This role also involves overseeing the operations of the Access to Justice Department, which supports our mission to provide referral, information, and legal assistance services to the community and solicitors in NSW.

About the Team

The Policy and Practice Department conducts research and advises on issues related to legal practice, policy, and law reform. We have 18 policy committees and are responsible for major legal policy projects.

The Access to Justice Department operates several key services, including the Pro Bono Scheme, Solicitor Referral Service, Locum Service, Legal Information Service, Dispute Resolution Service, and Law Society Mediation Accreditation Scheme. It also coordinates our advocacy efforts on access to justice issues, consulting with other committees and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert policy advice to the Chief Executive Officer on legal policy issues and initiatives.
  • Support the CEO, President, and Council with policy matters.
  • Lead key policy projects and campaigns.
  • Manage the performance and development of direct reports through our Performance Review process.
  • Oversee the activities of the Policy and Practice and Access to Justice Departments.
  • Participate in the Senior Management Group and contribute to our Strategic Plan.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manage budget expenditures effectively.

About You

  • You must be eligible to hold a NSW practising certificate.
  • Extensive experience in legal policy at a senior level is essential.
  • You should possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write reports, recommendations, briefing papers, and speeches in a clear and concise manner.
  • Able to think creatively and develop new approaches to addressing current issues.
  • Excellent analytical skills are required.
  • Proven management and leadership abilities are necessary.
  • You should have knowledge and application of budgeting processes, including monitoring costs and revenues against budget.
  • Effective resource management and problem-solving skills are required.
  • High-level interpersonal and influencing skills are essential.
  • Able to communicate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively as a team member and leader.
  • Work effectively under pressure.
  • Focused and outcome-driven.

Salary: $180,000 - $220,000 per annum (dependent on experience)
