Child, Youth Family Practitioner Job Description

This position is a unique opportunity to work with families and children in need of support. As a Child, Youth Family Practitioner, you will be working collaboratively with families to identify goals and develop strategies to improve relationships between parents and children.

The role involves providing tailored services to strengthen families and improve the wellbeing of children. This includes identifying risk and developing strategies to effectively manage these risks as well as supporting families to work towards providing a safe and nurturing environment.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing case plans that are culturally safe and trauma informed; that have clear tasks, responsibilities and timeframes with families.
  • Conducting behaviourally specific, interactive and holistic assessments, which includes information about culture, family strengths, risks, challenges, responsibilities, needs, values, skills and potential barriers to safety and goal attainment.
  • Providing a range of service responses that aim to increase the parent's/caregivers understanding, skill and knowledge of safe and nurturing parenting practices, life skills and coping skills, including in a group setting.
  • Facilitating effective linkages between the family and formal and informal supports.
  • Accessing and utilising specialist resources and evidence informed frameworks that address the complex needs of family members including FV, D&A, disability, mental health and impact of intergenerational trauma.
  • Strengthening the family's connection to community and culture by meaningful engagement with community supports that will sustain the family over time and be culturally appropriate.
  • Actively participating in supervision, team meetings, reflective practice and attending relevant training and development opportunities as available.

Successful applicants will need to possess a tertiary qualification in Social Work, Psychology, Community Services or extensive relevant experience. A demonstrated understanding of child protection legislation, family violence sector, practices, and safeguards, including the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Placement Principles, is also required.

Additionally, candidates will need to demonstrate their ability to work with First Nations communities, and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse, Newly Arrived, and emerging communities. Experience in effective case management with families, including holistic, consultative and collaborative approaches, assessing individual needs, developing and implementing case plans, leading regular case reviews, professional documentation and file record taking, is highly desirable.

This role requires a current Australian Driver's License and roadworthy insured vehicle for work-related travel. The successful applicant will be reimbursed for expenses incurred during work-related travel.
