About the Role

This position involves developing and implementing strategies to influence public policy in line with the Productivity Commission's goals.

  • Monitoring and analysing policy developments is key to assessing their impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Engagement with government officials and stakeholders is crucial, especially regarding their commitments under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap and other policy issues of importance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Conducting reporting, research and analysis that incorporates perspectives from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will be a primary responsibility.
  • Policy briefs, reports, and presentations must be prepared and presented effectively.
  • Collaboration with internal teams is necessary to align policy efforts with organisational objectives.
  • Strategic leadership is required in driving and overseeing projects while managing a geographically distributed team.
Qualifications and Expertise

A strong foundation in academic qualifications is required, preferably in areas such as public policy and analysis, social sciences, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies or a related field.

  • A preference for additional qualifications or experience in areas like mixed-methods research, economics, data analysis, law, the humanities or science would be advantageous.
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in public policy or a related role is expected.
  • A solid understanding of the Australian legislative process and policy cycle as it relates to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is vital.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • The ability to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait people, organisations and communities, along with representatives of other government agencies, businesses and organisations is critical.
  • A knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and perspectives is also necessary.
