Job Summary

The State of Washington is seeking a highly skilled Weights and Measures Compliance Specialist Supervisor to join our team. As a key member of our Weights and Measures Program, you will be responsible for enforcing state and federal laws and regulations to protect consumers and promote marketplace fairness.

Key Responsibilities
  • Program Management: Work directly with the Program Manager to set program goals, develop enforcement strategies, and implement new processes.
  • Supervision: Supervise, instruct, and assign work to weights and measures compliance specialists in the field, participate in personnel decisions involving field staff, including recommendations for hiring, assignment, promotion, and discipline.
  • Geographic Area Management: Manage and set priorities for your assigned geographic area.
  • Report Review: Review reports prepared by subordinates for completeness and use in legal proceedings; evaluate statistics and reports on staff and program productivity.
  • Expertise: Act as departmental expert in inspection and testing of weighing and measuring devices for accuracy, recheck and test scales, meters, and other measuring devices where disputes arise, confiscate or condemn inaccurate devices, evaluate device audit trails for evidence of fraud.
  • Consumer Complaints: Investigate consumer complaints of short weight, count, or volume; gather evidence and present complaints against violators; testify as a state witness; order short-weight, short-measure, or short-count merchandise off sale.
  • Training and Assistance: Travel to any area of the state to provide training and assistance to field inspectors, licensees, device owners, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Complex Inspections: Independently conduct the most complex inspections; accompany lower-level inspectors when dealing with difficult individuals or controversial regulatory actions.
  • Training Development: Develop new training based on the needs of weights and measures inspectors.
Requirements
  • Three (3) years of experience as a weights and measures compliance specialist.
  • One (1) year of supervisory or lead work experience.
  • Four (4) years of experience in the design, inspection, maintenance, repair, and/or installation of weighing or measuring devices with an Associate's degree or higher, with major coursework in mathematics, chemistry, physics, engineering, electronics, criminal justice, business administration, or allied fields.
  • Successful completion of National Conference on Weights and Measures professional certification exams appropriate to the inspections conducted by the program.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in mathematics, statistics, engineering, chemistry, physics, criminal justice, public administration, or allied fields.
  • Experience installing, repairing, or calibrating scales and meters.
