Energy Forecasting Specialist

The Operational Forecasting team is responsible for the short-term forecasts that feed into key operational and market systems in the National Electricity Market (NEM) and Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM). These forecasts are essential for supporting network outage planning, reliability assessments, and real-time operational decision-making across the short-term horizon.

A critical component of our forecasting process involves working closely with AEMO's weather providers to translate weather risks into system impacts. This collaboration ensures that operators have access to timely and accurate information necessary for informed decision-making.

To support the continued expansion of our forecasting capability, we are seeking a skilled Energy Forecasting Specialist to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing operational forecasting models, coordinating across teams and markets to align tools, data, and forecasting processes between the NEM and WEM, and contributing energy and weather information and insights into operational advisories, power system incident reviews, and market reports.

Key Responsibilities:

  • ">
  • Manage operational forecasting models for electricity demand, rooftop PV, grid-scale solar farms, and wind farms, including the development of forecast models by updating inputs, parameters, and variables to reflect system changes and improve performance.">
  • Work closely with AEMO's weather providers to translate weather risks into system impacts and ensure operators have the information they need.">
  • Coordinate across teams and markets to align tools, data, and forecasting processes between the NEM and WEM.">
  • Contribute energy and weather information and insights into operational advisories, power system incident reviews, and market reports to support secure and reliable power system operations.">
  • Support upgrades of forecasting applications, reform deliveries, and digital enhancements to improve the performance and reliability of forecasting systems and processes.">

You Will Bring To The Role

  • ">
  • Tertiary qualifications in science, engineering, mathematics, meteorology, or a related statistical discipline.">
  • Experience in the energy sector or similar industry, preferably in an operations, forecasting, or analytical role.">
  • Clear and confident communication skills, both written and verbal, including experience preparing high-quality reports and presentations to communicate technical information to a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.">
  • Working knowledge of data analysis and statistical modelling techniques, including but not limited to PowerBI, Databricks, SQL, and Excel.">
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and work across multiple projects.">
