About the Role

The Head of Department for Social Work Programs at Acknowledge Education is a senior leadership position that requires a strong academic background and experience in academic leadership roles. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing academic and operational leadership for both Higher Education (HE) Social work programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Academic and Operational Leadership
    • Lead and guide academic staff within the social work department.
    • Ensure the delivery of innovative and relevant social work programs.
    • Manage day-to-day operations, including timetabling, resource planning, enrolments, and RPL.
    • Oversee the assessment processes and ensure compliance with relevant policies.
    • Conduct performance appraisals and manage recruitment and workload allocation.
    • Mentor staff to promote teaching excellence and research productivity.
    • Facilitate induction processes and uphold academic staffing guidelines.
  • Course Development and Enhancement
    • Spearhead the development of new social work courses, including the Masters of Social Work (Qualifying).
    • Engage with Course Advisory and Review Committees and conduct necessary research for course improvement.
  • Student Success
    • Advocate for a student-centered approach to education.
    • Implement support services and initiatives to enhance student success, well-being, and retention.
    • Ensure the accuracy of information provided to students and maintain up-to-date student handbooks and orientation programs.
  • Scholarly Activities and Professional Development
    • Lead and support scholarly activities and professional development within the department.
    • Engage in research to enhance teaching and learning.
    • Review professional development applications and make recommendations based on performance appraisals.
  • Internal Audit and Organisational Outcomes
    • Assist with internal audits and ensure compliance with accreditation standards.
    • Collaborate on marketing, finance, budgeting, student admissions, graduation, and alumni communications.
About You
  • A PhD degree or equivalent qualification in Social Work and eligibility for membership with the AASW.
  • Proven experience in academic leadership roles, preferably within an education setting, demonstrating the ability to inspire, motivate, and mentor staff.
  • A strong academic background with a record of research and scholarly activities.
  • A commitment to promoting student success, well-being, and academic support.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic plans to achieve departmental and institutional goals.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills to promote collaboration among staff, students, and external partners.
  • Familiarity with relevant education policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Experience in maintaining academic quality and ensuring compliance with accreditation standards.
  • A proactive and innovative approach to program development and enhancement.
  • A demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion within the department and the AE community.
  • Valid Working with Children Check is a requirement for this role. If you are successfully hired for this role, you must obtain a check and you will be reimbursed by Acknowledge Education.
