Bioinformatics Research Scientist

The Garvan Institute of Medical Research is a leading medical research institute in Sydney, committed to delivering scientific and clinical impact globally.
We are seeking a talented Research Officer to join our Translational Genomics Program. The successful candidate will work with Dr Drew Neavin to analyze over 13,000 single-cell samples and explore the impact of biological variation on molecular phenotypes.
This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with a strong background in computational genomics, bioinformatics, or data science. You will have the chance to work on cutting-edge research projects, collaborate with international teams, and contribute to the development of new technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Resolving genetic mechanisms of complex human disease using single-cell and statistical genetics methods
- Leading aspects of the project and staying informed on advances in computational methods and genomics
- Presenting results in internal meetings and conferences, contributing to scientific manuscripts, and collaborating with other group members
- Record-keeping and administrative aspects that underlie scientific research
Requirements:
- PhD in a relevant field such as bioinformatics, computer science, biology, statistics, or other relevant areas
- High proficiency in programming and scripting languages (e.g., Python, R)
- Experience with Unix and HPC environments, managing large datasets, and version control for code development and curation
- An interest in genetics, cellular biology, and excellent problem-solving skills
- Good communication skills and strong teamwork and collaborative research abilities
