Job Description

As a Community Support Specialist, you will play a vital role in helping individuals and families from diverse backgrounds settle into their new lives in Australia. Your linguistic skills and cultural expertise will enable you to provide tailored support services, empowering clients to achieve self-agency and thrive.

The role involves welcoming and orienting new arrivals, supporting them to build independence in the community, providing language assistance to case workers, engaging with ethnic and faith communities to disseminate information and referral, and offering cultural insights to enhance the capacity of the wider staff team and sector.

You will be required to work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders to identify client needs and develop strategies to address them. Effective communication and interpersonal skills are essential for building strong relationships with clients, community members, and other stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

  • Support clients to attend appointments or events and facilitate opportunities for capacity building.
  • Provide language support for interactions between clients and internal/external services, teaching clients how to use professional interpreting services when required.
  • Assist clients in accessing public transport and navigate the transportation system.
  • Organize and accompany clients to workshops and information sessions, conduct orientation sessions, and interpret for workshops.
  • Assist clients in settling into short-term or long-term accommodation, supporting them to inspect properties and learn general accommodation requirements in Australia.
  • Support children and youth in achieving their goals, supervising Child Protection Out-of-Home Care visits or youth work-type support.
  • Provide newcomers with information about living in Australia, offer general guidance, and engage with ethnic/fault communities to disseminate information about SSI services.
  • Utilize cultural background to assist programs in co-designing activities by identifying community needs.
Required Skills and Qualifications

To succeed in this role, you will need to possess excellent linguistic and communication skills, with the ability to speak, read, and write in languages other than English. You should also be proficient in written and spoken English.

A Certificate IV or higher (or current enrolment) in a related field such as Community Services is desirable, along with experience working in a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) setting within and outside your own language/community group.
