Sydney, New South Wales, Australia The Next Step Full time

About The Next Step

The Next Step is a leading organization in the industry, employing over 5,000 employees nationally. Our culture is centered around work-life balance, personal development, and collaboration, where each team member plays a critical role in driving business success. As an Industrial Relations Advisor, you will have the opportunity to take ownership of IR processes on a national level.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Industrial Relations Advisor to join our People & Culture team. In an advisory capacity, you will collaborate closely with the P&C team and senior leadership, providing expert guidance on industrial relations and employee relations matters. You will ensure compliance with Fair Work standards, industry regulations, and union-related requirements. Additionally, you will play a critical role in shaping frameworks and toolkits for managing IR challenges within a large-scale, blue-collar, 24/7 workforce.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert, compliant advice on IR and ER matters, including union negotiations and dispute resolution.
  • Support the P&C and legal teams in navigating enterprise agreements, contract reviews, and regulatory compliance.
  • Develop frameworks and toolkits to streamline IR processes and mitigate risks.
  • Collaborate with the Head of P&C to design and implement IR initiatives that support business objectives.
  • Build capability in the P&C team by translating legislative updates into practical insights and providing IR-related training.

About You

The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of experience in managing complex ER/IR cases, tribunal representations, and union relations. You will have a deep understanding of workplace relations and employment law, with demonstrated experience in ensuring compliance and providing strategic IR guidance. Strong communication and negotiation skills are essential, as you will need to effectively influence and collaborate with senior stakeholders. Experience in building knowledge and capability within teams through practical training and simplifying complex legislative matters will be highly valued. While negotiating enterprise agreements is desirable, it is not essential. Your ability to thrive in a regulated, large-scale, blue-collar environment and contribute to a positive workplace culture will be key to your success in this role.
