We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated researcher to join our team as an Ocean Research Scientist.
About the RoleThis position will be based at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) and will involve undertaking active research in the Oceans and Cryosphere centre. The successful candidate will contribute substantially to the Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project 'The Role of Eastern Antarctic Polynyas in Global Ocean Circulation'.
Key Accountabilities- Prepare a paper for publication which quantifies the seasonal evolution of the surface mixed layer in response to air-sea fluxes and sea-ice growth and decay in East Antarctic polynyas.
- Extend recent analyses within the Prydz Bay region across East Antarctic polynyas to examine regional (spatial and temporal) variability in seasonal DSW formation, including the role and contribution from less active and/or smaller polynyas.
- Deliver research outputs within the scope, timetable, and budget of the project.
- Disseminate research results in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals, at national and international meetings, and through seminars.
To be successful, your application should demonstrate:
- A PhD in a relevant field such as physical oceanography, climate science, or other quantitative marine sciences.
- Excellent understanding of ocean dynamics and climate role.
- High-level quantitative skills demonstrated through analysis and interpretation of observational data and/or numerical simulations.
- Ability to conduct original, independent, and innovative research with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines to achieve collective and individual outcomes.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills for both specialist and general audiences.
- Proven record of publishing research in peer-reviewed literature.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a world-leading research project, contributing to the advancement of our understanding of ocean dynamics and climate. This role offers a chance to develop and apply advanced research skills, collaborate with leading researchers, and publish research in top-tier journals.
BenefitsThe position is available at either Academic Level A or B, with a total package up to $108,076 or $133,842 respectively. The salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Additionally, the University offers a range of benefits, including flexible working arrangements, professional development opportunities, and access to state-of-the-art research facilities.
How to ApplyTo be considered for this position, please submit your application, including your resume, cover letter outlining your suitability and motivation, and responses to the selection criteria.
