Research Scientist in Environmental Governance

We are seeking a highly skilled Research Scientist to join our team and contribute to the analysis of environmental governance in Antarctica.

The successful candidate will work closely with our investigators from National Antarctic Programs, particularly the Australian Antarctic Division, to provide strategic guidance for approaching environmental action proposals through the Antarctic Treaty System.

This position reports to the Chief Investigator and lead of SAEF Theme 3, in the School of Mathematical Sciences for supervision, workload management, and Performance Planning and Review (PPR).

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity for a researcher to make a significant contribution to our understanding of environmental governance in Antarctica.

You will be responsible for conducting independent and collaborative research under the topic of analysing and predicting the outcomes of Antarctic governance, and developing methods for achieving this goal.

The successful candidate will also be expected to collaborate with researchers across the SAEF centre, including those in social and political sciences, law and policy, computer science, ecological and conservation sciences.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting independent and collaborative research under the topic above, to be published as papers in leading academic journals.
  • Developing methods for analysing and predicting the outcomes of Antarctic governance.
  • Testing proposed methods using existing and emerging information from the Antarctic Treaty System database.
  • Presenting methods and findings to the broader, multi-disciplinary SAEF community.
  • Producing occasional articles suitable for a broader audience to increase public understanding of this area of research.
  • Organising, participating in, and speaking at workshops, seminar series, lectures and conferences relevant to this research.
  • Leading and collaborating on further funding.
  • Traveling to SAEF's university partners and domestic partner organisations.
  • Complying with data management requirements of the Australian Research Council and the Australian Antarctic Science Program.
  • Implementing and administering University policy within the Faculty with respect to equitable access to education and workplace health and safety.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A PhD in a relevant field such as mathematics, statistics, or data science.
  • Strong research skills and experience in analytical modeling.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Familiarity with the Antarctic Treaty System and its instruments.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
