Research Fellow In Strategic Decision Science
1 week ago
The Research Fellow in Strategic Decision
Science will provide SAEF with research
capacity in analysing Antarctica's
environmental governance.
In Antarctic, actions that influence
environmental outcomes are undertaken by
multiple parties. Some of these actions are the
result of negotiated consensus among
Antarctic Treaty Parties; others are unilateral
activities by nations and organisations.
We aim to use modelling techniques from
mathematics, statistics, and data science to
understand how governance outcomes are
influenced by a variety of social, political, and
economic factors, including the values of
different parties, international conflicts,
economic and scientific leadership. An
understanding of these governance processes
will help improve the efficiency and
effectiveness of Antarctic environmental
stewardship.
The position will undertake research in
collaboration with National Antarctic Programs,
to provide strategic guidance for how to
approach specific environmental action
proposals through the instruments of the
Antarctic Treaty System.
Success will be judged by the dual goals of
innovative scientific publications, and real
- world impact on the Antarctic governance.
The Research Fellow will work closely with
SAEF investigators from National Antarctic
Programs, particularly the Australian Antarctic
Division.
This position reports to the Chief Investigator
and lead of SAEF Theme 3, in the School of
Mathematical Sciences for supervision,
workload management, and for Performance
Planning and Review (PPR).
**Key responsibilities include**:
- Conduct independent and collaborative
research under the topic above, to be
published as papers in leading academic
journals.
- Develop methods for analysing and
predicting the outcomes of Antarctic
governance.
and testing of proposed methods, using
existing and emerging information from
Antarctic Treaty System database.
- Collaborate with researchers across the
SAEF centre, including researchers in the
social and political sciences, law and
policy, computer science. Close
collaboration with ecological and
conservation scientists will be particularly
essential.
- Present methods and findings to the
broader, multi-disciplinary SAEF
community.
- Produce occasional articles suitable for a
broader audience in order to increase
public understanding of this area of
research.
- Organise, participate in, and speak at
workshops, seminar series, lectures and
conferences relevant to this research.
- Lead and collaborate on further funding
- Travel to SAEF's university partners and
domestic partner organisations.
- Comply with the data management
requirements of the Australian Research
Council and the Australian Antarctic
Science Program.

workplace health and safety.
