Wollongong City Council, Australia beBeeCommunity Full time $99,338 - $110,271
Aboriginal Community Engagement Officer Role

As a key member of our team, you will play a pivotal role in fostering strong relationships with Aboriginal communities to enhance their preparedness, response, and recovery from floods. Your focus will be on building trust and ensuring that local community preparedness, warnings, and evacuation procedures are culturally responsive.

You will partner with Aboriginal people and communities to co-design service delivery that reflects the rich connection to Country and culture, and how this interlocks with addressing cultural considerations around warning, evacuation, and response.

This role involves supporting targeted community engagement activities, building capacity within State Emergency Service (SES) units, and strengthening local partnerships to foster connectedness and relationships.

Our organisation serves the community as the lead agency for Floods, Storms, and Tsunamis, recognised for its versatility and commitment to protecting diverse communities in NSW. With over 10,000 volunteers, we strive to deliver exceptional service while embedding strength-based approaches to working with communities.

To succeed in this role, you will need to demonstrate a passion for Aboriginal knowing, being, and doing, with a solid understanding of culture and community priorities. You must also have experience co-designing and working alongside communities to shape culturally responsive service delivery and projects, and the ability to embed co-design in government processes.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Co-designing and delivering culturally responsive service delivery and projects
  • Building trust and rapport with Aboriginal communities
  • Partnering with SES teams to build capacity in inclusive engagement and strong community partnerships
  • Supporting targeted community engagement activities

This is an Identified position, open only to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander persons. The position's requirements meet the criteria outlined in Section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
