About the role

As a Senior Legal Counsel, you will play a key role in providing expert advice and support to Coles' Liquor business, helping to deliver its strategy. This will involve reviewing and monitoring licensing risks and obligations, working with national operations teams to ensure robust policies and procedures are in place, and engaging with key internal and external stakeholders in the licensing, regulatory, and compliance space.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing, lodging, and facilitating new store, renewal, and amendment applications for liquor, tobacco, and food licences in a timely and effective manner.
  • Acting as a subject matter expert for all licensing and regulatory matters for Coles.
  • Effectively engaging and advocating on behalf of Coles with external regulators, authorities, and government agencies in the licensing, regulatory, and compliance space.
  • Managing resolutions and risk mitigation actions, and following up with stakeholders, regulators, and enforcement agencies.
  • Conducting risk assessments and analysis on legislative and regulatory restrictions that affect Coles.
  • Preparing, reviewing, and monitoring updates to laws and regulations and the regulatory compliance framework nationally, as well as internal policies and procedures on a continual basis and as directed.
  • Providing timely, accurate, and trusted licensing, regulatory, and commercial advice to support operations teams.
  • Working with stakeholders and the business on licensing training and education initiatives to ensure best practice.

About you and your skills

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced legal professional with a strong background in liquor licensing, regulatory, planning, and commercial law. Key requirements include:

  • Qualifications in areas of legal, compliance, government, regulatory, or policy.
  • Specialist experience in liquor licensing, regulatory, planning, and commercial law preferred.
  • Extensive experience working with governments, regulators, external stakeholders, and local authorities, including the ability to advocate on behalf of Coles.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement, influencing, and negotiation skills.
  • The ability to drive your own workload/outcomes and work autonomously.
  • Diligence and attention to detail in the work you do.
  • Excellent language, written communication, and negotiation skills.
