Australia is frequently impacted by severe weather events that are growing in intensity and frequency, leading to increased economic, infrastructure, property, and wellbeing impacts.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has taken significant steps to deliver customer-centric, integrated, and resilient national operations through the Community Services Group (CSG). CSG comprises Environmental Prediction Services (EPS), Decision Support Services (DSS), and National Production Services (NPS), enabling scalable, national, and resilient services.
During severe weather events, EPS deploys specialized hazard-based advice, warning, and outlook services. Operating with a national capability, EPS has four predictive service units: Severe Weather, Marine and Antarctic, Water, and Climate. Each unit plays a key role in delivering valuable products and services to the Australian community.
The Severe Weather Team monitors Thunderstorms, Severe Weather, Heavy Rainfall, Tropical Cyclone, and Fire, Heatwave & Air Quality conditions. The team provides advisory services on hazardous or impactful conditions, functioning as a single capability across three locations: Perth, Brisbane, and Melbourne.
Severe Weather Meteorologists develop and maintain expertise in multiple areas and teams for flexible deployment, operational resilience, and diversity of work. This may involve skills contributing outside of Severe Weather into other parts of CSG.
