Senior Public Affairs Officer Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Public Affairs Officer to join our Strategic Communications & Engagement team. As a key member of the team, you will contribute to public affairs activities and help shape strategies that maintain and enhance Council's position with the community and stakeholders.

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing traditional and social media content and engagement, monitoring community sentiment, and contributing to improving the connection between Council and the community.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Tertiary qualifications in journalism, communications, public relations or similar field along with experience in a similar role.
  • Demonstrated communications capability and ability to translate complex information into publicly accessible content.
  • Good knowledge of public affairs, media communications and stakeholder engagement disciplines.
  • Understanding of local government context and working environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of social media and digital platforms.
  • Understanding of managing media releases and responses.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including content development capabilities.
  • Ability to relate well to the public, elected members, media, management and staff.
Requirements:
  • A proactive, strategic communicator with keen interest in public affairs, media relations and community engagement.
