
Counsellor - Sexual Assault Support Specialist

This role provides a unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and communities affected by sexual assault.
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing trauma-informed clinical support to victim-survivors of sexual assault, their families, and supporters. They will work collaboratively with other organisations to ensure clients access necessary support and reduce the impact of sexual harm.
Key responsibilities and accountabilities include:
- Providing confidential, client-focused face-to-face and telephone counselling for adults, children, young people, and their support networks affected by sexual violence.
- Monitoring client progress and tailoring responses considering their diverse backgrounds, attributes, and preferences.
- Conducting culturally sensitive, trauma-informed intake assessments and providing information about services, supports, options, referrals, and waiting lists.
- Collaborating with other organisations to ensure clients access necessary support and reducing the impact of sexual harm.
- Supporting victim-survivors through legal and medical processes following recent sexual assaults.
- Performing urgent risk assessments to ensure safety for victim-survivors, children, and young people exhibiting harmful sexual behaviours.
- Providing brief counselling during periods of distress.
- Maintaining accurate client records and files, preparing court reports, and serving as a credible witness when required.
- Contributing to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of counselling and education programs.
- Participating in outreach, early intervention, and prevention educational initiatives.
- Advocating for clients' needs within the service system and promoting victim-survivors' voices and resilience.
- Attending team meetings and staff training, and participating in quality improvement initiatives.
- Working ethically, especially regarding child safety and wellbeing.
The ideal candidate will have experience working with clients in evidence-based trauma-informed counselling, knowledge of sexual assault and violence impacts, and strong interpersonal and communication skills. They will also be able to quickly learn Tasmanian and Federal legislation, regulations, and standards related to sexual assault, family violence, and child safety.
A Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, counselling, or equivalent, with registration (AHPRA or relevant professional body), is required. The successful candidate will also have a minimum of three years of practice experience and participation in the after-hours roster approximately six times per year.
