Lead Lawyer - Medical Defence Team

Avant Law is a specialist law firm seeking an experienced Lead Lawyer to join its medical defence team in Melbourne. The successful candidate will work closely with the Head of Practice and lead a team of lawyers in managing medical defendant cases.

This is an opportunity for a seasoned lawyer to progress their career and take on a leadership role within the firm. We seek an applicant with experience in managing and supervising lawyers, as well as a genuine interest in mentoring the next generation of lawyers.

The key responsibilities include:

  • Managing a civil file load and leading the medical defence team to achieve high-quality legal services and meet billing targets;
  • Supervising lawyers with a range of experience to deliver timely and efficient legal services, ensuring best possible outcomes for clients and reducing cycle times;
  • Coordinating resourcing and workflows within the team, ensuring management of claims in accordance with agreed protocols and professional standards;
  • Developing and mentoring team members to enable career growth within the firm;
  • Providing expert advice to the Head of Practice and other stakeholders on state legal trends, issues, and developments relevant to the practice group.
Requirements
  • 10+ years' PQE ideal;
  • Experience in leadership or strong interest in people leadership skills;
  • Defence medical negligence and insurance law experience ideal;
  • Demonstrated health law knowledge;
  • Proactive in developing relationships and understanding client, business, and team requirements;
  • Strong time management and multi-tasking skills.
