We are seeking an experienced Linux Kernel Engineer to contribute to our open-source community.
Job Overview
The successful candidate will take ownership of aspects related to the boot process, BIOS, UEFI, ACPI, and other platform firmware components as they pertain to the Ubuntu Linux kernel.
- The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of ACPI from a Linux kernel perspective, as well as familiarity with BIOS/UEFI to resolve issues reported by PC platform vendors or the community.
Key Responsibilities
- The candidate will collaborate regularly and proactively with a globally distributed team.
- They will work closely with our PC platform enablement team and vendors to resolve issues involving BIOS, UEFI, ACPI, or other problems involving boot and configuration of the Linux kernel.
- Becoming a primary contributor and maintainer to the Firmware Test Suite (FWTS) is a key requirement.
- Improving tooling and automation for comprehensive verification of Ubuntu Linux on x86 platforms will be an essential part of the role.
- The candidate will submit, review, and apply kernel patches, working with both internal and external upstream maintainers.
Requirements
- The ideal candidate should be a well-organised and motivated self-starter able to thrive in a remote work environment.
- A professional manner with colleagues, business partners, and the open-source community is expected.
- Effective communication skills in English, both written and verbal, are required.
- Significant programming ability in C is necessary.
- Demonstrated software development background involving UEFI and/or ACPI, with in-depth understanding of AML, is highly desirable.
- Solid background with git is essential.
- Familiarity with the x86 bootstrap process is a requirement.
- Understanding of operating system kernel fundamentals, with a focus on ACPI and UEFI interaction, is crucial.
- The candidate may be required to travel internationally twice a year for company events of up to two weeks length.
Desirable Skills
- Prior experience with Python and Bash scripting would be beneficial.
- Background with the coreboot project could be advantageous.
- Knowledge of Ubuntu/Debian/Snap packaging could be useful.
- Experience with Linux kernel patching and debugging could be valuable.
- Familiarity with Devicetree, SystemReady, u-boot, or other non-x86 platform bootstrap or configuration mechanisms could be beneficial.
