About the Role

The Australian Customs and Border Protection Service is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Legal Officer to join our team in the Migration and Citizenship Litigation Branch. As a key member of our legal team, you will be responsible for providing high-level legal advice and support to the Department and Minister on complex migration and citizenship matters.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide expert legal advice on migration and citizenship matters, including refugee, migration, and citizenship cases
  • Lead and supervise a team of Senior Legal Officers and Legal Officers in managing a complex and high-profile caseload
  • Develop and implement strategies to minimize legal risk and ensure compliance with the Legal Services Directions 2017
  • Provide instructions to external legal service providers and support the Assistant Secretary and General Counsel as needed
  • Maintain productive relationships with internal client areas, other Commonwealth stakeholders, and external legal service providers
Requirements
  • A degree in law from an Australian university or a comparable overseas degree recognized in Australia for admission to practice
  • Practising Certificate or eligibility to attain one
  • High-level technical knowledge in administrative and migration law, including student, skilled, family, visitor, and bridging visas, and relevant cancellation powers
  • Ability to translate complex legal information coherently and concisely for a range of audiences
  • Responsive to change and able to provide vision and meaningful direction to staff
