About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Bushfire Mitigation Officer to join our team in enhancing indigenous fire governance systems for fire and biodiversity management.

As a key member of our district, you will be responsible for developing and implementing bushfire mitigation plans, working closely with traditional owners, their communities, and stakeholders to enhance bushfire hazard mitigation culture and traditional burning support.

You will play a critical role in enabling the use of fire in the landscape, supporting fire management groups, volunteer community educators, fire wardens, brigades, and rangers, and coordinating community education and engagement.

This is an identified position under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld), requiring the incumbent to be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person. The recruitment process is only open to applicants who identify as being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement bushfire mitigation plans to reduce risk across the district, with a focus on risk in First Nations country.
  • Lead community education in bushfire prevention and preparedness, collaborating with brigade initiatives and community events.
  • Support the coordination and delivery of bushfire mitigation activities by traditional owners, rangers, brigades, and partners across the district.
  • Assist in managing the Fire Warden network and Permit to Light Fire system across the district, providing advice to landowners on vegetation management and education on permit breaches.

Requirements

  • An understanding of Indigenous traditional fire management and/or traditional burning practices.
  • Knowledge of, or experience working with volunteers and/or within a volunteer organisation.
  • Ability to meet the attributes of the generic RFSO2 role description.

Salary and Benefits

The estimated annual salary for this position is $85,009 - $93,296.

Officers appointed to this position will participate in a personal professional development program in conjunction with their supervisor, ensuring they have the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their duties effectively.
