News Editor – Canberra

We are seeking a dynamic News Editor to join our Canberra-based team at the Parliamentary Press Gallery in Australian Parliament House.

  • Curate and publish timely public-source news materials.
  • Anticipate and alert subscribers with real-time, accurate news updates.
  • Write smart, concise, and engaging editorials that keep pace with the week in Parliament.
  • Collaborate across teams to ensure top-notch content quality and comprehensive coverage.
  • Provide customer support by assisting subscribers with research queries and content needs.
Key Requirements:
  • Attention to detail and a sharp eye for top-tier quality copy.
  • Deadline mastery, including expertise in working to tight deadlines and navigating fast-paced environments.
  • Time management and punctuality, including flexibility to adjust working hours to suit the Parliamentary schedule and team roster.
  • Organizational skills, including reliability and adeptness at navigating structured workflows.
  • A collaborative spirit and strong communication prowess.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Insight into Australian Parliamentary or Government processes.
  • Robust research and analytical abilities.
  • Experience working with style guides, database and content management systems.
  • Passion for emerging technology and process innovation.

This role is strictly Canberra-based and onsite. You must be able to work from our Canberra office in Parliament House.

Role Overview:

The News Editor will play a key role in shaping the narrative of the Parliamentary Press Gallery's publications, working closely with the editorial team to develop and deliver high-quality content on time.

The ideal candidate will have a recent graduate degree in Law, Politics, or Media, or equivalent experience as an editor with prior content production, copy editing, or publishing experience.

They will possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage with diverse audiences and stakeholders.
