Position Overview
The Australian Government Department of Defence is seeking to appoint an Aviation Safety Assurance Officer (ASAO) within the Directorate of Initial Airworthiness. This pivotal role is essential in ensuring the integrity of the Authority's assurance functions for organisations recognized as Military Design or Production Organisations within the defence aviation sector. The ASAO will engage closely with various product assurance teams and the regulated aviation community. The responsibilities of the ASAO include:
- Executing assurance and oversight functions for Military Design Organisations, focusing on the continued airworthiness of aircraft designs;
- Implementing assurance and oversight for Defence Military Production Organisations;
- Conducting evidence sampling and assessments to ensure compliance with established regulations;
- Evaluating applications for various Authorisations issued by DASA, which may pertain to individuals, organisations, or product approvals.
The Directorate of Initial Airworthiness (DIA) is committed to the principle of 'Capability First, Safety Always', emphasizing our mission to uphold safety in defence aviation capabilities. The DIA-DASA plays a crucial role in:
- Developing and disseminating initial airworthiness policies and regulations;
- Certifying systems within the Defence aviation framework;
- Supervising design and production entities.
Ideal Candidate Profile
We are looking for a qualified engineer with a strong passion for aviation safety in the Defence sector. As an ASAO, your role will significantly influence aviation safety outcomes. Experience in the design, production, or management of safety-critical systems within the aviation field is highly advantageous, as is familiarity with type certification and initial airworthiness principles in both civil and military environments.
In this position, you will leverage your extensive experience to evaluate organizational performance and identify safety risks. Practical experience in safety risk evaluation or exposure to aviation safety is highly desirable. You should be methodical in your oversight activities and possess a keen attention to detail. Professionalism and confidence in providing high-quality advice to senior engineering managers and key stakeholders are essential. Knowledge of Defence Aviation Safety Regulations (DASR) and/or Aviation Safety Management Systems (ASMS) will be greatly valued.
