Youth Mental Health Support Specialist

We are seeking an experienced and compassionate individual to join our team as a Youth Mental Health Support Specialist. This is an opportunity to provide support to young people aged 12-25 years, helping them navigate and overcome challenges related to trauma, mental health, and emotional distress.

The successful candidate will have the ability to connect with others, foster a sense of understanding, empathy, and hope, and build relationships based on shared experiences and mutual respect. They will also be able to identify and respond appropriately to vulnerable individuals who may be at risk and hold space for emotional complexity with care, while maintaining professional boundaries to protect both personal wellbeing and the safety of those you support.

This role requires strong organisational, interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) to communicate effectively with individuals, liaise, build relationships and partnerships, consult and negotiate with a wide variety of stakeholders.

Key duties include:

  • Using your experiences to connect with others and foster a sense of understanding, empathy, and hope.
  • Building relationships based on shared experiences and mutual respect.
  • Identifying and responding appropriately to vulnerable individuals who may be at risk.
  • Holding space for emotional complexity with care, while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Advocating for individuals' rights, helping them identify and utilise their strengths, and supporting them in making positive changes towards recovery.
  • Knowledge of clinical mental health and community services and other appropriate referral pathways.
  • Problem solving effectively, engaging and working creatively with individuals and within the organisation.
  • Conducting presentations and programs to large groups of people working from a lived experience perspective.
  • Working effectively in a team.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A valid Department of Human Services (DHS) Working with Children Check.
  • A Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work or Mental Health Peer Work Skillset (or willing to work towards).
  • A Certificate IV in Mental Health (or equivalent).
  • A valid South Australian driver's license.
