Job Title: Senior Outreach Lawyer

The First Nations Outreach Solicitor role is an exceptional opportunity for a passionate and experienced lawyer to join our program, building and maintaining reciprocal relationships with First Nations communities.

As a senior solicitor in this position, you will engage in culturally safe legal practice, education, and reform on cultural heritage issues affecting Indigenous peoples. You will have the chance to build strong connections and learn from community members, as well as lawyers and other professionals working across various environmental justice issues – climate change, pollution, mining, gas, cultural heritage, biodiversity, and human rights.

Outreach travel, including to remote areas, is a necessary aspect of this role. The successful candidate will work independently, within a collaborative team environment, and meet deadlines.

The ideal candidate will possess a valid practicing certificate or entitlement to one, at least 2 years PAE experience (5 years desired) for Solicitor level and 5 years PAE for Senior Solicitor level. They will also have demonstrated expertise in areas such as legal outreach, education, administrative law, environmental law, and/or cultural heritage law. Additionally, they will possess excellent problem-solving skills, ability to make sound judgments, and good file management and delegation skills.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Understanding cultural heritage legislation and issues across multiple states, territories, and the Commonwealth.
  • Creating legal education materials for First Nations and/or bilingual communities.
  • Understanding mechanisms available to First Nations communities at the international level, including the United Nations.

They will also be expected to demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills, commitment to the protection of the environment and related human rights, a strong sense of ethics and professional obligations, awareness of and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of Indigenous peoples and diverse cultures, backgrounds, and orientations in both the delivery of work and internal culture.
