Job Opportunity: First Nations Outreach Solicitor

Seeking a passionate and experienced legal professional to join our team. We are looking for a talented lawyer with demonstrated expertise in environmental law, outreach, or a related field.

Key Responsibilities:
  • To practice culturally safe legal engagement, education, and reform on cultural heritage issues facing First Nations peoples.
  • To build relationships and learn from a diverse range of community members, as well as lawyers and other professionals working on various issues in pursuit of environmental justice.
  • Travel for outreach purposes, including to remote locations, will be necessary.
Requirements:
  • A practicing certificate or entitlement to one.
  • A minimum of 2 years PAE desired for this role (a minimum of 5 years PAE desired for senior roles).
  • Demonstrated experience in areas such as legal outreach, education, administrative law, environmental law, and/or cultural heritage law.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to make sound judgements and decisions based on consideration of different views.
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively and to deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills suited to a range of audiences.
Selection Criteria:
  1. Essential requirements
    1. A practicing certificate or entitlement to one.

    3. Demonstrated experience in areas such as legal outreach, education, administrative law, environmental law, and/or cultural heritage law.

  2. Substantive experience
    1. Understanding of cultural heritage legislation and issues in multiple states, territories, and at the Commonwealth level.
    2. Experience in creating legal education materials for First Nations and/or bi-lingual communities.
    3. Understanding of mechanisms First Nations communities can apply at the international level, including the United Nations.
    4. Capacity to undertake law reform or policy.
    5. Demonstrated experience working with First Nations people or diverse communities and individuals highly desirable.
