Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Prisoner Support Specialist

The Cultural Liaison Officer plays a pivotal role in supporting management and staff in navigating cultural issues affecting prisoners.
- Provides guidance on cultural needs during sentencing, contributing to case management.
- Attends prisoner inductions and parole interviews, assisting with transition arrangements for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners.
- Works collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to manage the progression of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners through the correctional system.
- Liaises with prisoners, families, management, and service providers to meet individual, social, and cultural needs.
- Coordinates Elder visits and facilitates offender access to legal services.
Additionally, the successful candidate will:
- Raise awareness among staff of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoner needs.
- Provide welfare services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander offenders, including support for family issues and leave requests.
- Assist with criminogenic programs targeting identified rehabilitation needs.
- Complete program exit reports and document relevant case notes.
- Maintain current knowledge of indigenous issues, trends, and practices.
