Climate Change Researcher Job Description

The University of Tasmania is seeking a talented researcher to join our team in investigating changes in ocean temperature and Earth's energy balance, key to understanding the planet's response to climate change. As part of the prestigious ARC Laureate Fellowship project Precision Climate Tracking, you will be working on a high-impact research program that delivers precise, policy-relevant insights into the evolving climate system.

This role focuses on using large scale Southern Ocean circulation and coupled ocean-atmosphere modelling to gain a deeper understanding of the complex interactions between the ocean and atmosphere. The successful candidate will contribute to a collaborative, multidisciplinary team and have the opportunity to shape national and global understanding of climate mitigation efforts and support decision-makers with robust scientific evidence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducting research on Southern Ocean circulation and coupled ocean-atmosphere modelling
  • Collaborating with researchers and programmers to achieve project goals
  • Developing and maintaining effective links with the discipline, profession and wider community

Requirements:

  • PhD or equivalent in physical oceanography or equivalent but in highly related discipline (e.g. geophysics, ocean biogeochemistry)
  • Good record of, and continuing commitment to, research that has achieved international recognition and made worthwhile contributions to the field of physical oceanography
  • Experience in University post-graduate research supervision

Benefits:

  • Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level B
  • Relocation assistance and visa sponsorship may be considered for the right applicant
  • Access to an array of staff benefits and discounts including health and fitness membership options, accommodation and car hire discounts, and health insurance and banking options

About the Opportunity:

As part of the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), you will be working with a globally recognised centre of excellence in marine and climate science at the University of Tasmania. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a high-impact research program and make a difference in understanding the complexities of climate change.

What We Offer:

The University of Tasmania values diversity and inclusion and is committed to fostering a workplace culture where everyone feels valued and supported. We offer a range of staff benefits and discounts, as well as opportunities for professional development and growth. If you are passionate about making a difference in climate change research, we encourage you to apply for this exciting opportunity.
