Climate Research Opportunity

The University of Tasmania is seeking a highly skilled Research Associate to contribute to its prestigious ARC Laureate Fellowship project Precision Climate Tracking. This role focuses on investigating changes in ocean temperature and Earth's energy balance, key to understanding the planet's response to climate change.

As part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team, you will work alongside PhDs, researchers, and programmers to deliver precise, policy-relevant insights into the evolving climate system. Your expertise in large scale Southern Ocean circulation and coupled ocean-atmosphere modelling will be invaluable in shaping national and global understanding of climate mitigation efforts and supporting decision-makers with robust scientific evidence.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • A PhD or equivalent in physical oceanography or an equivalent but highly related discipline (e.g. geophysics, ocean biogeochemistry).
  • A good record of, and continuing commitment to, research that has achieved international recognition and made worthwhile contributions to the field of physical oceanography.
  • Experience in University post-graduate research supervision.
  • A record of contributing to building and maintaining effective and productive links locally and nationally with the discipline, profession, and wider community.
  • In-depth skills in the use of climate model data sets (like the CMIP simulations) and their analysis.
  • In-depth knowledge of the methods of analysis of ocean observations.
  • Desirable: knowledge of machine learning, or other spatial Artificial Intelligence methods.
