Marine Conservation Specialist - Mayala Joint Management

Protect and conserve the marine environment in the West Kimberley district, working closely with Traditional Owners to manage the Mayala Marine Park.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Participate as an alternate member of the Mayala Joint Management Body and liaise with Traditional Owner partners to facilitate cultural and operational management strategies.
  • Assist in the management of the Mayala Marine Park within the Buccaneer Archipelago.
  • Carry out programmed operational activities and field logistics for lands, waters, wildlife, cultural and natural resources under the department's control in the district.
  • Conduct marine park patrols to raise public awareness of marine park values, regulations, compliance, management intervention, research and monitoring as directed.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:
  • Ability to participate in (Grade 1) and implement (Grade 2) operational plans and works programs for visitor management and natural resource management with an emphasis on the marine environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with experience in patrol and enforcement activities, and liaison with the public, tourism operators, community groups, Indigenous groups, other government agencies and stakeholders.
  • Knowledge (Grade 1) and experience (Grade 2) in vessel logistics, operation and skippering of vessels up to 12 metres, with Coxswain Grade 2 (NSCV Near Coastal) as a minimum certificate of competency; ability to work in confined spaces and remote areas for extended periods.
  • Knowledge of and experience in Aboriginal culture and ability to work effectively with Aboriginal people.
