Salary: $80,000–110,000

What the Role is Quacked Up to Be

The Head Chef of ROAR is the source for inspirational leadership and a passion for culinary excellence. You’ll be driving the business forward and overseeing a wide range of daily activities from day‑to‑day kitchen operations to forecasting, budgeting and menu creation, all while providing positive and loving mentorship for the future generation of Chefs.

The Head Chef reports to the Resort Manager and is responsible for leading the culinary program towards financial success while upholding ROAR’s brand and values.

In your first 3 months, you will…

- Spend time with your team, cooking on the line with them to learn our current menu and processes

- Sit down and meet with each member of your team to learn more about their story and goals

- Learn the ins and outs of the kitchen, how it is currently being run, systems and processes with an eye to identify gaps and areas of improvement

- Build relationships with your two Sous Chefs, learning their strengths, aspirations, and career plans

- Sit down with the FOH team to learn their perspective on the food, clientele, and what they hear from our guests

- Work closely with Carl, the Restaurant Manager to learn how the FOH runs and interacts with the BOH team

- Build relationships, cook with the team, and learn from the team behind the ROAR brand

- Work closely with Chris Baddeley, Senior VP, to develop a plan for your vision of the restaurant to ensure it aligns with our purpose, values, and the ROAR brand

- Meet with Mandy Farmer to understand her original intention and vision for ROAR

In your first 12 months, you will…

- Have updated and streamlined our inventory systems

- Developed new seasonal menus that reflect the local bounty of Tofino and showcase our live fire culinary program

- Taken full advantage of the ROAR greenhouse to grow seasonal produce to showcase on our menu and feature sheets

- Collaborated with the FOH team to ensure the serving staff are fully educated on our menu, ingredients, and suppliers

- Have worked closely with the Resort Manager Matt Brear to develop an events plan for ROAR cooks to showcase our unique culinary program and the ROAR brand

- Developed career plans for your team to elevate their culinary skills and help them with their continued growth and success

- Represented ROAR at local food festivals in Tofino and Victoria

- Partnered with the Wolf Pack (our sales team) to develop custom menus for groups staying at Zed Tofino

- Have identified areas of wastage and created systems to address them reducing our overall costs

- Collaborated with your Sous chefs on menu creation, feature sheets, and catering events

- Have gained the trust of the BOH and FOH teams through building relationships, supporting development and working with the team to create exceptional experiences for our guests

- Have worked with the P&C team to create a hiring and succession plan for your team, attending hiring fairs and working with co‑op programs

This exciting role will have a significant impact at ROAR. You will lead our kitchen, making your mark on a truly unique and creative culinary scene: Tofino. You will be able to utilize the bounty of the West Coast, our on‑property greenhouse and the live fire grill to create a unique and inviting menu and atmosphere for our guests. You will help grow a team of excited and talented cooks who want to hone their craft and work in a unique and creative space.

What to expect from us?

Application

First Interview (45 min)

You will meet with Jamie Galano, our HR Manager, to discuss your previous experience and what draws you to Tofino.

Second Interview (60 min)

You will meet with Matt Brear, the Resort Manager of Zed Tofino Resort, and Emma Woodward, the GM of Zed Victoria, to discuss your leadership experience, Tofino’s unique culture and environment, and the restaurant’s operations.

Final Interview (60 min)

You will meet with Noah Warder, VP of People & Culture, and Chris Baddeley, Senior Vice President, to discuss your experience as a chef, as a leader, our Leading with Love philosophy, and how you envision your time at ROAR.

Onsite Visit

We will work with you to get you to Tofino for two nights to meet with the team and Carl, the Restaurant Manager, cook on the line with your team, tour the kitchen, hotel, and greenhouse, and observe the restaurant in action.
