About the role
We are looking for an enthusiastic Clinical Psychologist to join the mind-body team based in the Department of Psychological Medicine at the Children’s Hospital Westmead. We are a small multidisciplinary consultation-liaison (C-L) team that works closely with Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, the Neurology Department, the Adolescent Medicine Department, the Chronic Pain Service, and the Hospital School.
Our sub-specialisation is running an inpatient program for functional presentations – usually functional neurological disorder. These admissions typically run for two weeks and are quite intensive, including an individual mind-body intervention with the young person, work with the family, and work with the school. We are the only service in NSW to provide an inpatient rehabilitation program to young people with functional somatic symptoms (e.g., limb weakness or paralysis, abnormal movements and gaits, functional seizures, complex/chronic pain), and have a well-established clinical research program which regularly publishes world-leading research in the area of functional somatic symptoms and provides training and supervision to hospitals and community teams within Australia and internationally. As part of our C-L role we also provide psychiatric consultations to young people with a medical condition and acute mental health assessments to young people with safety concerns admitted to the Neurology and Adolescent Wards.
What you will do
This position entails working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and involves comprehensive family and individual assessment, case formulation and treatment planning in a tertiary referral setting. It also involves referral and handover to local and rural treatment services, and may involve ongoing complex case management. The clinician is expected to demonstrate knowledge of, and competence in providing assessment and treatment in a range of therapeutic modalities, specifically, systemic family therapy and cognitive behaviour therapy as a minimum.
The Clinical Psychologist will also be involved in research projects - for example the dissemination of information—which are being run by the clinical team. In addition, the role includes the provision of clinical supervision to rural and remote clinicians via videoconferencing through the Child & Adolescent Psychological Telemedicine Outreach Service (CAPTOS).
This is an excellent opportunity for a Clinical Psychologist who is looking to extend themselves to work at a tertiary level in a supportive team.
