Overview

TWO NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS roles to deliver the provision of retail water supply and wastewater services across five local government areas. Two positions commence in 2026.

About Urban Utilities

Urban Utilities was established on 1 July 2010 as a statutory body to be a distributor-retailer under the provision of the South East Queensland Water (Distribution and Retail Restructuring) Act 2009 and as a service provider under the Water Supply (Safety and Reliability) Act 2008.

Urban Utilities Participants are the councils of Brisbane, Ipswich, Lockyer Valley, Scenic Rim, and Somerset, and Urban Utilities operates in a unique environment where it serves the same customers and communities as its Participant Councils.

One of the largest water distributor-retailers in Australia, Urban Utilities is responsible for delivering drinking water, recycled water, and wastewater services to approximately 654,837 residential properties and 30,225 commercial properties in South-East Queensland and delivering these services via a vast $6.9 billion infrastructure network.

Urban Utilities is governed by an independent board of eight skilled, non-executive directors including the Chair.

The positions

Urban Utilities is seeking to recruit two new non-executive directors as part of planned board renewal with the retirement of two non-executive directors who reach tenure effective 30 June 2026.

Key selection criteria

It is essential that the two non-executive directors have skills, knowledge, and experience in one or more of the following areas:

- Skillset 1: Commercial and Financial Acumen

- Demonstrated ability to provide strategic financial oversight, assess investment opportunities, and guide long-term capital management decisions.

- Ability to contribute to strategic decision-making by balancing commercial imperatives with Urban Utilities’ public purpose and stakeholder expectations.

- Skillset 2: Economics, Accounting and Regulatory Expertise

- Demonstrated knowledge of regulatory frameworks, compliance obligations, and public policy processes relevant to entities operating in regulated environments.

- Ability to evaluate the commercial and community impacts of regulatory change, policy shifts, and pricing frameworks on Urban Utilities’ operations.

Urban Utilities is ideally seeking candidates based in South East Queensland; however, applications from directors across the eastern seaboard of Australia will be considered if they meet the criteria. Candidates should also undertake or be prepared to undertake relevant professional training such as the Company Directors’ Course offered by the Australian Institute of Company Directors within a year of appointment.

These are remunerated roles. The initial term of appointment will be a minimum of three years.
