City of Melbourne, Australia Amber Electric Full time

⚡About Amber

Amber is an entirely new way of thinking about buying, banking and selling energy – where home energy technology works to put money back in customers’ pockets and accelerate the renewable energy transition. Everything we build is about making that possible and putting traditional retailers in the shade.

We believe the cheapest, fastest and most rewarding way to reach 100% renewables is to automate the growing wave of home batteries and EVs. Customers get direct access to the real-time wholesale electricity price and the technology to shift energy usage to the times when cheaper renewables are available in the grid and exported to the grid at times when the price they can be paid for it is highest.

We are backed by Australia’s leading VCs (including Square Peg Capital, Main Sequence Ventures, Rubio Impact Ventures, and Breakthrough Victoria), impact-focused investors and individuals, and most recently by Commonwealth Bank, NRMA, Gentrack and ETF Partners (UK/Europe based).

We are growing rapidly and have thousands of customers who love what we are doing and a great product that will play a significant role in driving Australia and the world towards a renewable future.

We’re now at a critical moment in taking the business to real scale as we disrupt a huge market for the better. You’d be a part of a rapidly growing team of over 150, with expertise across energy, technology, marketing, and operations. We’re committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace and a great culture of people who love coming to work to build a better world.

Amber for Batteries unlocks more value for homeowners with batteries, driving down their energy bills and their payback periods. By storing energy when it’s cheap and exporting it to the grid for wholesale feed‑in rates of up to $19/kWh, Amber’s software is completely changing the economics of home batteries and accelerating the energy transition.

Amber for EVs is our EV smart charging solution that helps EV owners save on their charging costs by using more cheap, renewable energy – whether that’s their own excess solar energy, or renewable energy that’s abundant in the grid. In 2025, we are kicking off development of our game‑changing vehicle‑to‑grid technology.

Why we need this role

We’re growing fast across Australia and the UK/Europe, and we want to make sure our people are always paid accurately, on time, and in full compliance with local laws. We’re looking for a steady and safe pair of hands to own our payroll operations and keep things running smoothly behind the scenes. You’ll be the go‑to person for all things payroll: the details, the data, the questions, and the confidence that everything adds up. Paying our employees is one of the most important administrative functions in our business, and we need someone to get it right 😎

Reporting to the Senior People Operations Manager, your role will include managing the Australian and UK payroll via our HRIS (Rippling), processing employment changes, managing the payroll inbox and responding to employee pay queries, maintaining Rippling’s records, and ensuring compliance with employment, tax, and superannuation legislation. The ideal candidate is an experienced payroll professional who enjoys being the quiet engine room that keeps everything running smoothly. You’re comfortable working autonomously and take real pride in getting the details right. You’ve likely managed end‑to‑end Australian payrolls before – maybe across multiple entities or states – and you know your way around an HRIS. You’re organised, dependable, and have a calm, friendly approach that puts people at ease when they come to you with payroll questions.

You will be part of the People Operations team. Our purpose is to deliver work that eliminates high friction, amplifies community and sets our people up for success. You will also collaborate frequently with the Finance team.

This role is 0.4-0.6 FTE, 2-3 days per week

We will only consider applicants looking to work ideally 2, maximum 3 days per week, so please don’t apply if you are seeking more. We warmly welcome applications from working parents and anyone seeking part‑time or flexible work, including the ability to work predominantly remotely

What you’ll be doing

- End-to-end processing of the monthly Australian and UK payroll using Rippling – from data validation through to payment and reporting.

- Managing the payroll inbox, answering questions from employees and resolving issues.

- Maintaining employee records in Rippling, including pay and employment changes, new starters, terminations, and leave adjustments.

- Ensuring compliance with relevant employment, tax, and superannuation legislation.

- Preparing and reconciling payroll reports for Finance (including journals, PAYG, super, and STP).

- Assisting with the annual EOFY process, audits, and other payroll‑related projects as we scale.

- Partnering with People Operations and Finance to continuously improve our payroll and HRIS processes.

What boxes you should tick (mostly)

- Solid hands‑on experience running Australian payroll in a small to mid‑sized business.

- Familiarity with Rippling or other modern HRIS/payroll systems.

- Understanding of tax, superannuation, salary packaging and novated lease principles.

- Comfortable managing sensitive information with confidentiality and care.

- Able to work independently, set priorities, and meet deadlines without close supervision.

- Great communicator, approachable, clear, and helpful with internal stakeholders.

- Seeking part‑time work, 2–3 days per week (FTE 0.4–0.6).

Nice to haves:

- Prior experience at a growing company, a start‑up, or a tech company; understanding the joys and pain points.

- Passionate about technology, energy and/or the environment.

- Working knowledge of UK payroll (or a willingness to learn quickly).

What you’re good at:

- You are obsessed with details and numbers. You spot a rounding error from a mile away and take pride in clean reconciliations.

- You love delivering work on‑time. You can work to clear, non‑negotiable deadlines, and thrive getting through your to‑do list efficiently.

- You’re comfortable managing yourself. You’re organised, dependable, and deliver on what you promise, even when working remotely.

- You’re curious. You want to understand the why, and are always looking for smarter, more efficient ways to work.

- You’re a people person. You balance accuracy with empathy — because behind every pay slip is a person who counts on you.

Why you want to work at Amber

- Be part of a growing technology start‑up that will shape the future of renewable energy around the world.

- Flexible working arrangements prioritised, with regular WFH arrangements and a central office in Melbourne CBD.

- Equitable, gender‑neutral parental leave policies.

- An external Employee Assistance Plan (EAP) for mental health support.

- Employee share option plan (ESOP) in Amber.

- Annual Learning & Development budget to support your personal growth.

- Additional PTO between Xmas & New Year.

$75,000 - $90,000 a year

💰 Salary range is between $75,000 and $90,000 per annum plus superannuation. Depending on your part‑time working arrangement, you will be paid a pro‑rated amount of this (40‑60%). All roles at Amber include employee stock options over and above the base salary and superannuation.

This is a part-time role, to be based anywhere in Australia.

We are open to any and all flexible working arrangements. We do have an office in the Melbourne CBD, where we work flexibly between the office and home (no office mandate). For those based in Sydney, catch up in a co‑working space, or if you are based elsewhere in Australia, you will work from home. We have also recently got a co‑working space in London, UK We expect to remain Melbourne‑based but maintain flexibility.

🌈 If this kind of work gets you excited, we'd love to hear from you

Even if you don’t meet 100% of the requirements listed above, we still encourage you to apply. We're open to all backgrounds and encourage people from underrepresented groups to apply. We never discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, or disability status.

Hiring Process

- A screening interview with the Hiring Manager (Senior People Ops Manager).

- A take‑home project to complete, to showcase your payroll skills.

- A follow‑up interview to discuss your project, and your skills & experience, with 2 members of our People Ops & Finance teams.

- A final chat with the Senior People Ops Manager.

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted and applications will be accepted only from candidates already based in Australia with full working rights.

No recruitment firms please. We've got this
