Where you'll be working

Macquarie Hospital. Macquarie Hospital is a declared, low-secure, 195 bed mental health facility with 14 beds for adult acute admissions and 181 beds in long term and short term rehabilitation services for consumers with schizophrenia, dual diagnosis and other enduring psychotic illnesses. It is located in North Ryde, 22km from the CBD of Sydney on approximately 42 hectares of parkland.

What you'll be doing

This opportunity exists for the first Senior Consumer Peer Worker role in NSLHD. In this pioneering role the position is crucial in advocating for the needs of our consumers from a lived experience perspective. The role will collaboratively develop and deliver individual and/or group activities that support social inclusion, rehabilitation and recovery through the ability and willingness to share aspects of their experience with service navigation and recovery journey to role model recovery. The role will champion the support and development of Consumer Peer work students and provide leadership and mentoring to our dedicated team of Consumer Peer Workers.

People of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background are encouraged to apply.

Candidate Criteria

- Hold relevant tertiary degree of a recognised University or College of Advanced Education requiring a minimum of three years full time study, or other qualifications deemed to be equivalent with a certificate IV in mental health peer work or willingness to undertake.

- Extensive experience in mentoring and/or providing supervision to other peer workers, promoting continuous professional growth and adherence to best practices in peer support.

- Demonstrated capacity to use one’s own recovery journey constructively to support and inspire others, including being able and willing to share aspects of one’s own Mental Health experience with service navigation and recovery journey with others individually or in a group setting.

- Demonstrated ability to build effective partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, with high level interpersonal and communication skills to negotiate and influence outcomes, resolve conflict and motivate change. This includes the ability to have difficult conversations, negotiate and resolve conflict while upholding lived experience values and principles, as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills including demonstrated high level computer literacy and administration skills.
