About the National Measurement Institute
We are the Australian Government's national measurement authority. We play an important role in the Australian economy by leading, maintaining and regulating Australia's measurement system.

About the Flow Team

We are part of the Physical Metrology branch who provide Australia's peak measurement standards for physical quantities, and we develop and maintain Australia's most accurate standards for measurement of volume, liquid and gas flow, delivering calibration and consultancy services from internationally recognised state-of-the-art laboratories. Our activities are accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities, as well as through regular review by international peers. We provide key services to the health & safety, oil & gas, and aerospace industries. We have a wide range of research and development underway to rapidly extend our capabilities to meet emerging needs in the hydrogen economy, biomedical and advanced manufacturing industries.

The team operates primarily from NMI's Lindfield site in Sydney and from a dedicated facility for measurements of hydrocarbon flow in Western Sydney.

Our ideal candidate

You are a recent graduate, a laboratory technician, or a metrologist working in a NATA-accredited laboratory. You will:

- Have a science or engineering degree or equivalent laboratory experience.
- Come with practical experience with laboratory instrumentation, mechanical and basic electronics skills.
- Be proficient with the analysis of data and basic statistics, using MS Word and Excel.
- Establish and maintain respectful and productive working relationships and work collaboratively within a team environment.
- Be a quick learner, able to listen and follow procedures, and to complete tasks independently once trained, taking responsibility for the delivery of outcomes.
- Be a self-motivated, reliable, and flexible team player.
- Apply your skills to prepare technical reports and communicate effectively.
- Demonstrate a work approach and behaviours aligned to NMI's values of being inclusive, innovative, accountable, adaptable, influential and strategic.
- Be willing to grow, adapt and develop new skills as required.
- Familiarity with VBA, Python or LabVIEW is desirable.

What you will do

You will support and work closely with the team's engineers to develop, maintain and operate NMI's world-class flow calibration laboratories. You will contribute to delivery of scientific services under an ISO 17025-accredited quality system, and to the team's ongoing research and development efforts to meet new and emerging national needs. As a flow calibration technician, you will use the full range of your technical and communication skills to:

- Design and set up complex and automated flow-meter testing configurations and test and diagnostic instrumentation.
- Conduct flow-meter calibrations in compliance with safety and quality requirements.
- Analyse test results and prepare technical reports.
- Contribute to the team's research and development programme, method development and validation studies.
- Coordinate and assist with diagnosing and solving equipment problems.

- Gain experience in the development and operation of complex automated heavy-engineering mechatronics systems, instrumentation and data acquisition.
- Gain experience and familiarity with the operation of a calibration laboratory under an ISO 17025-accredited quality system, including the traceability of flow measurements to Australia's primary flow standards, the estimation of measurement uncertainties, and the alignment with international standards.
- Gain experience with liquid and gaseous flow engineering and associated technologies in the oil-and-gas, environmental, transport and manufacturing sectors.
- Work with leading researchers on the development of new flow measurement standards supporting a range of established and emerging industrial applications.

Eligibility

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.

Positions require a Baseline security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.

Notes

The department does currently offer flexible work opportunities for many roles. NMI flow laboratories operate at two sites in Sydney: Lindfield and Londonderry. The successful candidate will be expected to work across both sites. Please reach out to the contact officer to discuss this further.
