You will be joining a forward-thinking public sector organisation renowned for its commitment to customer service, integrity, and respect. If you are passionate about making a difference through collaborative policy work and thrive in a supportive workplace that values diversity and continuous improvement, this could be the perfect next step in your career.

What you'll do:

As Principal Policy Officer Strategy and Governance you will play an integral part in driving forward strategic policy initiatives that underpin the organisation’s mission. Your day-to-day activities will involve leading critical projects from inception through delivery—ensuring that all policy recommendations are thoroughly researched, evidence-based, and aligned with both legislative requirements and stakeholder needs.

You will collaborate closely with colleagues across various divisions as well as external partners to foster an environment of open communication and shared purpose. By providing expert advice on complex issues—supported by robust analysis—you will help shape decisions at executive levels while also ensuring that governance processes run smoothly.

- Plan and lead the development of policy and strategy priorities by analysing current trends and preparing comprehensive responses to initiatives from other government agencies as well as legislative reviews.
- Undertake special projects involving complex policy work by providing effective project management oversight, monitoring deliverables closely, determining priorities, and identifying or managing risks that may affect successful outcomes.
- Prepare or assist with the preparation of high-quality submissions, briefs, discussion papers, Cabinet submissions, interjurisdictional proposals, Estimates briefs, policy research documents, and progress reports on complex issues.
- Build productive and collaborative working relationships across internal teams as well as with external government agencies and stakeholders to ensure alignment of strategies and shared objectives.
- Assist with the identification, development, and implementation of integrated strategies, policies, legislation, and programmes by considering diverse perspectives including those of customers and stakeholders.
- Conduct thorough research into emerging issues by seeking out diverse viewpoints to provide timely advice supported by clear rationale to senior leadership.
- Represent the Strategy and Planning team or broader division at meetings when required to ensure organisational interests are effectively communicated.
- Provide high-level confidential secretariat support for efficient management of governance boards and committees within the organisation.
- Contribute positively to the team culture by modelling inclusive behaviour that supports safety, respectfulness, cultural capability, ethical conduct, and wellbeing for all staff members.
- Undertake additional duties as required to support the overall objectives of the Strategy and Governance division.

What you bring:

To excel as Principal Policy Officer Strategy and Governance you will bring substantial experience navigating public sector environments where collaboration empathy responsiveness—and sensitivity towards diverse perspectives—are paramount.

Your background should include hands-on involvement with developing policies or strategies that address multifaceted challenges often requiring input from multiple sources. You are adept at synthesising large volumes of information into actionable insights which inform executive decision-making processes.

- Demonstrated experience in government policy development or strategy formulation with advanced analytical skills enabling you to identify options quickly while assessing implementation impacts in complex environments.
- Proven ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing—including preparing detailed reports or briefings—and explain recommendations effectively using evidence-based reasoning.
- Strong interpersonal skills allowing you to build dependable partnerships within teams as well as externally; you are known for your collaborative approach which fosters trust among colleagues.
- Capacity for objective systematic analysis: sourcing diverse perspectives before drawing reliable conclusions based on available data or research findings.
- Experience establishing clear plans for activity delivery—including consultation processes—within agreed timeframes while adapting flexibly when circumstances change.
- Ability to apply specialised knowledge related to policy analysis evaluation or legislative review; you use this expertise proactively when achieving desired outcomes for stakeholders.
- A track record of providing considered advice supported by clear rationale which incorporates customer views alongside those of other stakeholders involved in decision-making processes.
- Understanding of Cabinet or Parliamentary processes along with statutory interpretation skills would be highly regarded; experience reviewing legislation is advantageous but not mandatory.
- While not essential an undergraduate or higher degree qualification in public policy law or related discipline will be viewed favourably by selection panels.
