This is an exceptional opportunity to be responsible for supporting the Wiluna Martu Ranger Program.
We are looking to fill roles for two (2) Ranger Coordinators, based on a fly-in fly-out model, with the time of each new employee being spent in both Perth (CBD) and Wiluna, unless the applicant is already living in Wiluna full-time.
Applicants need to have strong people skills, with an emphasis on listening to the mob as their role is to advocate for them, preserving their culture and Country.
Role 1: Ranger Coordinator (Seed/botanical with a youth/community engagement focus). This position is to lead and coordinate a seed collection enterprise program together with the Martu people in Wiluna, and to support, facilitate a youth/community engagement program with the Wiluna Martu Rangers associated with their land management, cultural, environmental, and ranger activities.
Role 2: Ranger Coordinator (land management focus). This position will be responsible for leading and coordinating an Indigenous land management program with Wiluna Martu Rangers across their determination.
Key Responsibilities
Role 1
- Ensure effective execution of the seed business plan and build and adapt this as the business continues to take shape. This will be done in consultation with the seed experts and partners that are already engaged as part of this project, in line with funding requirements.
- Facilitate meetings with the ‘Steering Committee’ comprised of Martu Rangers to obtain guidance on how the seed business should run and to keep track of how the business is running.
- Oversee management and maintenance of Seed Production Area, including: planting, flora and fauna surveys, seed collection from within the compound, general maintenance of retic, fences, solar systems, etc., with support from Martu.
- Plan, organise and lead seed collection work on Country with Martu, ensuring culturally appropriate methods are used and culture is respected.
- Identify seed species to collect, where and when, in consultation with elders, rangers, and botanists/specialists in this field.
- Ensure quality of seed collection, cleaning, storage, record keeping, and back-of-house logistics for seed transportation, consultant engagement, and invoicing, etc.
- Monitor progress and report on seed collection outcomes (volumes, species, germination potential etc.).
Youth / Community Engagement
- Oversee and facilitate engagement of the Wiluna Youth Ranger Programme, within the Wiluna Martu Rangers program - collaborating closely with teachers and students from Wiluna Remote Community School and funders.
- Support Wiluna Martu Rangers with general administration needs such as working with child checks, obtaining licences, applying for TFN, attaining birth certificates, etc.
Role 2
Land Management & Culture
- Coordinate ranger activities related to land management and associated land survey activities: cultural burning, invasive species control, threatened and invasive species surveys, mapping, and two‑way science.
- Organise and facilitate upskilling workshops and training programs for both Wiluna Martu Rangers and Youth Rangers.
- Facilitate training (on‑Country, technical, safety) so the ranger team and community gain skills.
Applicable to both roles
1. Coordination of Rangers
- Support the Wiluna Martu Rangers and assist with planning field trips, training, equipment, and safety.
- Work with elders, knowledge holders to ensure that all ranger work respects Martu cultural protocols and upholds the organisation’s core values of People, Country, Culture.
2. Team Leadership and Capacity Building
- Encourage Martu Rangers to develop their skill sets, participate in workshops, and to include elders.
3. Stakeholder Engagement & Communication
- Liaise with community members, elders, and Traditional Owners to obtain guidance and approval.
- Work with external partners (government, NGOs, scientists, funders) as required.
- Prepare reports, updates, and communicate in plain, understandable ways to both Martu and other stakeholders.
4. Administration, Planning & Reporting
- Develop work plans, timelines, and budgets for ranger work.
- Keep accurate records following trips, including reporting on outcomes
- Monitor risks (environmental, logistical, safety) and manage them.
- Report on outcomes regularly (to funders, community leadership, etc.).
5. Field Work
- Spend time on Country, in remote and potentially challenging conditions.
- Assist with transporting materials, supervising work in the field, ensuring safety.
- Be flexible, adaptable to weather, seasonal changes, community priorities and cultural limitations.
Reporting & Relationships
- Reports to: Program Manager and Board of Directors, Mantjil`jarra Yulparirra
- Works closely with: Martu elders, Wiluna Martu Rangers, other Ranger Coordinators, environmental scientists, partner organisations, and funding bodies.
- Supervises: Ranger teams and (Role 1) seed collectors.
Employment Conditions
- Location: FIFO role, based in Perth with regular field trips and travel to Wiluna, to conduct on-Country work. Transport, food & accommodation for field work covered.
- Duration: 2 years, with possible extension.
- Other: safety gear and training provided; flexible hours during field season.
Key Selection Criteria / Skills & Experience

- Some experience in seed collection, botany, plant ecology, or land restoration
- Business management skills
- Experience working with indigenous youth/youth

Both roles
- Strong understanding of Martu culture, customs, and respect for traditional ecological knowledge, or a willingness to learn.
- Experience or willingness to work in remote outback field conditions; comfortable with remote area travel, camping / remote visits.
- Ability to lead, mentor, and work with Indigenous ranger teams.
- Good planning, organisational, record‑keeping, and reporting skills.
- Good communication skills - able to listen, consult elders, and report simply to funders and the community.
- Be a strong advocate for the Wiluna Martu Community.
- Strong commitment to safety in field work.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, manage time, and work under limited supervision.
- Your willingness to stay in this role long-term (>2 yrs), as building strong relationships with the community takes time.
