About Aboriginal History Western Australia (AHWA)
AHWA is responsible under the State Records Act 2000 for managing access to restricted records created by the Aboriginal Affairs Planning Authority and its predecessor agencies. AHWA provides specialised research services to assist Aboriginal Western Australians seeking their personal and family history information. The unit also undertakes special projects to increase understanding of the shared history of Western Australia and contribute to reconciliation. AHWA provides dedicated research services to help Aboriginal Western Australians trace their personal and family histories. AHWA manages access to restricted records created by former State Government departments responsible for Aboriginal Affairs up to the 1970s. These records are essential for responding to individual research requests and are critical in supporting redress schemes supported by the WA Government.
About the role
The Stolen Generations Redress Scheme recognises the harm and trauma caused by removal of children from their families, communities, culture and Country. AHWA is managing the research component of the Scheme. A specialist research team has been established within AHWA to respond to requests from the Scheme, including assessing applications against available records to determine eligibility.
The Level 7 Manager Research Stolen Generations Redress will lead and manage the Aboriginal History Research Services (AHRS) team to achieve outcomes and build strong relationships with the Aboriginal community and key stakeholders in the development and implementation of AHWA policies, procedures and services.
The Level 6 Coordinator Aboriginal History Research Services plans and coordinates AHRS responses to family history, Redress and other requests, ensures outgoing responses are accurate and compliant with AHRS policy and applicable legislation. The position also supervises the AHRS research team, identifies development needs, and coordinates in-house training programs.
We have one fixed term, full time (75hrs p/f) position available with the possibility of subsequent contracts and/or permanency. This is a multilevel pool for Level 7 and Level 6 appointments within AHWA.
For further information, contact Melanie Walley-Stack, Director Aboriginal History, on 0466 945 454 (this is the only contact for information about the role).
