Two roles. One epic year. Are you our next communications superstar?
At the City of Mandurah, we do things a bit differently. Following internal development opportunities for two of our communications team, we’re offering a unique 12-month contract that’s anything but ordinary in one of the State’s most exciting and busy local governments.
This isn’t your typical 12-month contract. We're looking for one talented professional to take on two distinct roles over one unique year. You’ll spend your first six months as our Communications and Public Relations Advisor, supporting our Mayor, Councillors and leaders with high-impact media strategies. Then, for the next six months you’ll step into a Strategic Communications Specialist role, driving the major campaigns that deliver on our community’s vision and strengthen the City’s reputation.
Why the unique structure? Because we believe in our people. This opportunity exists because we’ve promoted two of our communications team to share an acting leadership role, building their skills and our team’s future. It’s a perfect example of how we work: we’re innovative, we invest in talent, and we’re not afraid to do things differently to get the best results.
You won’t be going it alone. You’ll be joining an experienced, collaborative, and values-driven team. Best of all, the two people you’ll be covering for will still be right here in the team, ready to support you, share their knowledge, and help you get up to speed quickly. It’s the perfect setup to hit the ground running and make a real impact on some of the region’s most exciting projects.
Don’t worry if you don’t think you fit both position descriptions perfectly: we’re looking for someone with the right attitude who can work alongside the rest of our team and build their capability in this unique role.
Sounds interesting? Here’s a short day-in-the-life video that shows you what it’s like being part of the team.
The opportunity
This is a full-time, 12-month temporary contract with optional 9-day fortnight and work-from-home flexibility, in a team that operates at the highest level.
This unique role offers the chance to work across two dynamic positions over two six-month terms:
- Term One: Communications and Public Relations Advisor – supporting the Mayor, Councillors and Executive Leadership Team to deliver proactive, high-impact media and public relations strategies.
- Term Two: Strategic Communications Specialist – leading organisation-wide strategic campaigns that deliver on our community vision and strengthen the City’s reputation.
You’ll be supported by an experienced and collaborative team as you transition between these roles, providing the opportunity to expand your skills across media relations, communications campaign management and digital communications.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver proactive media and public relations strategies that support the Mayor and Council.
- Coordinate media enquiries, write speeches, statements, and creative content across multiple channels.
- Plan, develop and evaluate strategic communications campaigns that align with the City’s Strategic Communications Framework and Strategic Community Plan.
- Manage digital and social media content to build audience engagement and strengthen community connection.
- Collaborate across the organisation to deliver consistent, brand-aligned communications.
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A degree in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience in media and public relations, including proven writing and storytelling skills.
- Strong understanding of strategic communications and campaign management principles.
- Experience working across digital platforms and social media channels.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
For more information about the role please refer to the position descriptions.
The City of Mandurah’s strategic communications team is shaping Mandurah’s future through our shared stories, and we have a team culture that supports our people at every step. Our culture action plan describes how we invest in our team culture, from monthly lunch roulette to team offsites and planning days that give us the time to think and be strategic. We can talk about work from home options and 9-day fortnights, but also how we’ll promote your work within the team and organisation, the specific things we do to build trust within the team, and how we’re using new technology to make your job easier and more productive.
This role offers variety, professional development, and the chance to work on some of the region’s most exciting projects and campaigns — all while being supported by a creative, values-driven team.
