About us

As a department our purpose is to help the community to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from the impact of fire and emergency events.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is the primary provider of fire, rescue and emergency management programs and services throughout Queensland. The department encompasses the Fire and Rescue Service, disaster management services, the Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service (SES), and also supports other volunteer groups providing emergency response to Queenslanders.

QFES is one department with many services, many capabilities and many partners.

Purpose of the role

SES Strategic Liaison and Assurance Unit supports the delivery of SES organisational priorities and objectives through the initiation and management of strategic engagement and corporate governance and assurance. The unit is also responsible for the development, maintenance and monitoring of corporate services ensuring SES state and regional capabilities are developed and maintained.

Reporting to the Executive Manager, Corporate Support and Assurance, you will be responsible for providing high level timely and confidential advice and coordination to support regional business managers in ensuring responsibilities and statutory obligations are delivered and achieved, in relation to governance and financial management processes and standards. You will support the ongoing management of corporate services provided to and within SES, including monitoring outcomes, reporting and issues management.

Special requirements
- The incumbent will be appointed as a staff member of the SES and the hours of duty applicable to this role are pursuant to the Queensland Public Service Officers and Other Employees Award - State 2015: specifically, the spread of ordinary hours for SES staff are 0600 to 2200, Monday to Sunday.
- It is expected the incumbent will participate in an out-of-hours on-call roster during emergency operations. This may require work outside of normal hours (e.g. night shift), including weekends, working extended hours and may include travel to rural and remote communities, intrastate or interstate travel as necessary and/or deployment activities to other parts of the state.

Your key accountabilities

Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:

- Contribute to the development, implementation, and ongoing monitoring of the corporate support plan between SES and Queensland Police Services (QPS), providing regular reports on service delivery outcomes.
- Support the management and coordination of corporate support functions provided to SES by QPS, including identifying risks / issues, engaging with key stakeholders to develop solutions and supporting the development and implementation of business improvement activities.
- Provide support and advice to regional business managers regarding the development and ongoing management, and performance against agreed regional objectives.
- Work with state and regional SES staff to establish, implement and support consistency of business administrative processes statewide, with a focus on business improvement and reducing the administrative burden on staff and volunteers.
- Prepare, contribute to and quality check correspondence, briefs, reports, and submissions ensuring actions and priorities are addressed and accurate and appropriate replies formulated.
- Represent and promote the interests of SES strategy and planning at internal and external meetings and forums and negotiate agreed outcomes as required.
- Build and sustain partnerships and networks with internal and external stakeholders, and actively identify opportunities to engage these stakeholders on initiatives, to effectively liaise and negotiate agreed outcomes on difficult and complex agreements, projects and program issues.
- Lead and manage significant projects on a diverse range of issues that impact SES's business and participate in divisional and departmental initiatives to support ongoing improvement strategies.
