The Manufacturing Division of the Construction, Forestry and Maritime Employees Union (CFMEU) is seeking a highly motivated National Industrial Officer to join our National Industrial Legal Unit, based in Carlton, Melbourne to provide industrial advice and advocacy, support negotiations, disputes and campaigns, prepare and present legal cases and submissions, and other industrial/legal work.

Our division covers multiple industries, including forestry, wood-processing, timber & building products, on-site activity such as glazing and floor-laying, and manufacturing activity such as furniture-making, glass production, pulp & paper, soft furnishings, têxtiles, clothing and footwear, dry cleaning and laundries.

This is a great opportunity to use and expand your legal & industrial skills by working directly at the industrial coalface in a blue-collar union with coverage over diverse industries.

**Key responsibilities**:

- Contribute to the growth and organising effort of the union.
- Provide strategic industrial advice to support the union’s industry, industrial, agreement making and growth campaigns and provide on-going tactical industrial advice throughout the campaigns.
- Undertake industrial and legal research as required including for campaigns or policy development
- Provide strategic input in the development and implementation of the union’s bargaining strategy.
- Monitor, aggregate and analyse the effect of decisions and judgments of the Fair Work Commission and other relevant tribunals and courts.
- Prepare and present cases and submissions for the union in the Fair Work Commission and relevant courts and tribunals.
- Provide industrial information, training and support for organisers, delegates, members, staff and officers.
- Co-ordinate industrial work across the Division nationally.
- Provide strategic and industrial/legal advice to the leadership of the Union.
- Review and maintain current knowledge of regulatory responsibilities and ensure compliance, including with the legislative requirements for registered industrial organisations and with the AEC.
- Provide strategic advice to the leadership with respect to the union’s rules, policies and procedures.

**Essential Selection Criteria**:

- A strong commitment to the trade union movement and union values.
- A degree in law or other relevant tertiary education/qualifications
- Experience and/or knowledge of labour law and industrial relations
- Well-developed analytical, problem-solving skills and a capacity to contribute to strategic planning
- Organisational skills, including the ability to plan and meet deadlines
- The ability to prepare and articulate a position formally at a tribunal, court, mediation or meeting
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- MS Office skills including MS Word and MS Excel
- The ability to work collaboratively and flexibly, both in a team and independently.

**Desirable Selection Criteria**:

- A current Victorian Practising Certificate
- Experience in advocacy in Fair Work Commission and relevant courts and tribunals
- A sound understanding and working knowledge of the Fair Work Act 2009
- Prior experience working for a trade union, either directly, or indirectly as a workplace delegate.

- Wage salary range $90-$120,000 commensurate with skills and experience plus five weeks annual leave with 20% leave loading, 13 rostered days off per year, and 15.5% superannuation.
