**About the Role**
Join us in a dynamic Research Assistant role where you'll drive innovative microbiology and human disease research within Melbourne Dental School and Bio21 Institute. Under A/Prof. Antonio Celentano's guidance, you'll be an essential part of our collaborative team, addressing antimicrobial resistance in partnership with global experts in sexual health research at the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and industry partners. This role not only offers exposure to leading experts but also a thriving team culture, making it a prime opportunity for driven individuals seeking impactful and long-term research careers.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Establish 3D oral mucosa equivalent models, co-culturing NG with oral cells (e.g. keratinocytes/fibroblasts).
- Assess Neisseria Gonorrhoeae (NG) viability and invasion using a range of cell culture, microbiology, immunohistochemistry and microscopy techniques.
- Assess cellular toxicity of compounds screened in the model.
- Carry out experiments related to the project ethically, accurately and productively.
This work will directly inform the following project
**Who We Are Looking For**
You are a collaborative team player with strong organisational skills, adept at problem-solving and efficient time management. Your excellent written and verbal communication is evident through impactful conference presentations, internal discussions, and manuscript submissions.
You will also have:
- A completed degree in a relevant field (e.g., biomedical sciences, microbiology, or related disciplines).
- Strong research background with experience in cell culture, microbiology or infectious diseases.
- Quantitative research experience including writing research proposals, conducting literature reviews, conducting research and writing manuscripts.
- Proficiently conduct independent academic research: design, execute experiments, maintain accurate records, and analyse data to achieve objectives autonomously.
