**POSITION DESCRIPTION - **Strategic Planner

**Purpose
**The Strategic Planner is responsible for working collaboratively across the organisation to support the
development and alignment of Council’s suite of strategic plans, and lead development of work

area/service specific plans to progress the community’s aspirations.

The role includes researching, interpreting and presenting information from a range of sources to inform
the development of the organisation’s plans; supporting key corporate areas to align other key strategies

and plans; and preparing information for Council, Executive and Managers in a timely and accurate
manner.

This position will establish and maintain close working relationships with Executive, Managers and Staff in
providing a full range of planning and review services including training, support and advice.

The position is also responsible for leading or participating in other Strategy projects on an as-needs basis.

**Key Responsibilities and Outcomes**

**Strategic Planning**

Support the development and ongoing review of council’s strategic plans including:

- Leading the environmental scanning processes for Council Committees and to inform the

development and management of various Council’s plans
- Leading the roll out of strategic plans across the organisation, including providing support and

training to staff regarding the plans
- Providing support to Executive and management to present strategic plans to Elected Members

and the Community
- Working in collaboration with the Community Engagement Coordinator to engage the community

and key stakeholders regarding the plans
- Keeping key communication tools including the website, social media sites, and internal

communication avenues up to date regarding the plans
- Ensuring the provisions of the Local Government Act and other key legislation are met in regard to

strategic plans
- Managing key contracts for data sources and analytics
- Providing the organisation with advice and support to identify future strategic issues and

opportunities and facilitate strategic discussions.
**Business Planning**

Work collaboratively across the organisation to ensure the development and integration of work area plans
through:

- Developing and continuously improving the work area planning system, and coordinating the

monthly reporting across the organisation of projects in work area plans, in line with the overarching
strategic management framework
- Developing and reviewing tools, templates and guidance information to support the work area

planning system
- Working closely with all teams across the organisation to develop work area plans
- Supporting understanding and building capability across the organisation to understand the value

of work area plans and using them actively to manage their business

- Ensuring key alignment with other organisational systems and processes including service reviews,

performance monitoring and management and corporate reporting.
**Annual Business Plan**

In close collaboration with the Finance team, work in partnership to develop the Annual Business Plan,
including:

- Ensuring all legislative requirements are met in the development of the Plan
- Ensuring adequate opportunities for Elected Members to lead the process of developing the Plan
- Ensuring the community is engaged in the development of the Plan
- Leading the alignment of the Plan with other key strategic and business plans across the

organisation
- Working in collaboration with the Communications and Community Engagement teams to

develop communications material to support the development and circulation of the Plan.
