**POSITION DESCRIPTION -**Media and Engagement Advisor**
**Purpose**

The Media and Engagement Advisor is responsible for the development and implementation of media

strategies, opportunities and initiatives, with the aim of increasing civic participation, improving the

Council’s identity, brand and presence in the community and strengthening two-way communication with

internal partners and external stakeholders.

The role works across the organisation and collaborates closely with the Mayor, Elected Members,

executive, internal and external stakeholders to support a strategic and integrated approach to media

management and community engagement management.

The Media and Engagement Advisor monitors overall media engagement and acts as the primary contact

for all media enquiries, manages relationships with key media, develops and disseminates media

messages, products and briefing materials, and identifies potential engagement opportunities.

**Key Responsibilities and Outcomes**
- Leads and manages the development and implementation of media strategies, opportunities and

initiatives to improve Council’s identity, brand and presence, and to strengthen communication
with internal partners and engagement with external stakeholders.
- Provides pro-active and strategic media advice to the Mayor, Elected Members and executive to

support an integrated approach to media and engagement at the City of Marion.
- Develops, writes, edits and disseminates media related products, including media releases, key

messages, speeches and briefing notes.
- Identifies media engagement opportunities to promote awareness of Council services and

activities and to promote engagement opportunities.
- Identifies media risks and implements appropriate risk mitigation strategies.
- Establishes, manages and maintains relationships with key media contacts.
- Develops monitoring and tracking systems to ensure consistency in media relations, track trends

(e.g. social media content in relation to community engagement) and to report on trends to inform
Council decision-making.
- Ensures all mandatory and legislative requirements, along with Council policies and procedures,

are understood and met.
- Complies with existing Work, Health and Safety legislation and regulation obligations and apply

“Think Safe Live Well” philosophy.
- All other duties as required.

**Person Specification**

**Essential Requirements**
- Australian residency.
- Advanced written and oral communication skills
- Minimum 3 years post-qualification experience in media, journalism or communications role.
- Proven ability to deliver high-quality outputs within tight timeframes.

**POSITION DESCRIPTION -**Media and Engagement Advisor**
- Experience in developing and implementing media strategies and initiatives to improve identity, brand

and presence.
- Ability to extract and analyse data from media monitoring and tracking systems (including social

media) for report-writing purposes.
- Sound understanding of Local Government.
- Possessing a high degree of political acumen.

**Qualifications**
- Tertiary qualifications in media, communications or related field.***

- Experience working in a political environment
- Advanced skills in social media platforms

**Special Conditions**
- Out of hours work including weekend and evenings may be required.
- Attendance at Council meetings (after hours) may be required.
- Current driver’s licence.
