**The opportunity**:
The DNA Extractions unit is charged with providing DNA extraction services to all VCGS laboratories, managing referral of specimens to external laboratories, and on behalf and to MCRI research laboratories.

The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for performing DNA extraction from VCGS specimens and documenting the results into Labware, the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). Further, the Laboratory Technician will also be responsible for performing other general laboratory duties identified for each area (under supervision if necessary) as well as active participating in the Sendaways area and managing all the duties within this role as directed by the Head of the Unit. Highly developed interpersonal skills are fundamental for this role. Operational staff must be able to work in a team environment and without supervision and be able to work under stress when workloads are high.

The VCGS Laboratory Services department is the central and frontline receiving and processing area for all specimens within VCGS. This position requires flexibility in availability to work on shifts as rostered throughout a 12-hour period (7am-7pm) to fulfill the responsibilities of this position. As part of this role you are required to participate in a rotating roster between (current shifts are: 7:30am-3:30pm, 8:30am-4:30pm, and 9am-5pm) to ensure you maintain the skill set to perform the inherent requirements of the role. Additionally, this may also include participating in a rotating roster that includes Saturdays between the hours of 07:00 am - 13:00 pm as required by the needs of the business.

**Your responsibilities include**:
Performing DNA extractions on various types of tissues using a variety of automated platforms
Performing DNA extraction using manual kits for various types of tissues including precious samples
Setting up of sample(s) for extraction workflows in accordance to laboratory’s SOPs
Assisting in validation of new processes and methodologies as required and directed
Handling and troubleshooting anomalies found during processing and confirmation of customer requirements as required

**About you**:
Diploma of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory), B.Sc., or equivalent
(Essential) Previous experience in a fast-paced, NATA accredited diagnostic laboratory
(Essential) Ability to adequate and clearly communicate in both verbal and written form
(Highly desirable) Experience using Hamilton, TECAN, and/or QIAGEN (including QIAsymphony, QIAgility and QIAcube) robotic platforms
(Desirable) Sound understanding and familiarity in molecular techniques
