About You
The Research Associate (RA) will be appointed for 12 months (Full-time) and will work closely with a group of leading Research Scientists in the research field of biomimetic protein-based adhesives and will undertake research activities in line with the University’s research strategy. RA will carry out innovative and impactful research of strategic importance to RMIT with the possibility of novel and important scientific outcomes. Harnessing nature’s design principles for bio-adhesion, the research work will develop wet adhesive materials based on biomimetic strategies and understand adhesive properties and suitability of the newly developed adhesives for use in tissue adhesion and repair. Experience in the synthesis of recombinant protein polymer is a strong plus.
The RA will be based in Melbourne and will have access to synthesis, bioprocessing equipment and characterization facilities at RMIT university. This multi-disciplinary research will lead to high-impact publications, and conference presentations; and generate knowledge for the improved bio-adhesion technologies that mimic the adhesion and biomechanical properties of a variety of native tissue micro-environments. We are therefore seeking to recruit a scientist with multi-disciplinary knowledge and skills (protein engineering, chemical engineering, physical chemistry, and materials chemistry) to conduct cutting-edge research.
To be successful in this position, you’ll have as a minimum:
- A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as chemical engineering, physical chemistry, protein chemistry/engineering and materials chemistry.
- Research experience in biomimetic protein polymer, synthesis of protein polymeric materials, and modular protein engineering including research skills in modern laboratory methodologies and materials characterization (e.g. Recombinant DNA technology, Fermentation, Small-angle x-ray, Small-angle neutron scattering, biochemical analysis, and other relevant equipment).
- Demonstrated a high level of computer literacy, including standard software packages, experimental data modelling
- Evidence of strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to publish the results of scientific research in scientific journals.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct challenging experiments, solve complex experimental problems and cope with ambiguity or situations that lack clarity.
- Exhibited ability to work cooperatively in a multi-disciplinary research team with staff and students from diverse backgrounds with the motivation to carry out autonomous research while contributing to overall team performance.
- Proven ability to conceive research ideas, design experiments, and recognise and make immediate changes to improve performance.
- Established ability to analyse information and make independent, correct and timely decisions related to a defined element of the work of the project team.
- Ability to maintain productive working relationships with team members and other stakeholders.
