About us

As a department our purpose is to help the community to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from the impact of fire and emergency events.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is the primary provider of fire, rescue and emergency management programs and services throughout Queensland. The department encompasses the Fire and Rescue Service, disaster management services, the Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service, and also supports other volunteer groups providing emergency response to Queenslanders.

QFES is one department with many services, many capabilities and many partners.

Purpose of the role

The Office of the Commissioner provides support and advice to the Commissioner and the QFES Executive Leadership Team to aid decision making and ensure achievement of key commitments and objectives.

Reporting to the Chief of Staff you will be a key member of the team, responsible for providing high quality executive and operational support by managing the processing of correspondence and assisting the Commissioner in the preparation of daily activities. You will also be required to liaise and consult with a variety of stakeholders, including officers at all levels within QFES, ministerial staff, media and external stakeholders from other emergency service providers, and public and private sectors on a range of issues impacting the department.

Your key accountabilities

Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting key frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:

- Provide high level advice on administrative, governance and operational issues which support the operations of the office.
- Prepare, contribute to and quality check correspondence, communications, reports and submissions ensuring actions and priorities are addressed and accurate and appropriate replies are formulated.
- Manage liaison and maintain effective communications with internal and external stakeholders relating to a range of issues that may impact the department or Commissioner.
- Monitor and review systems and procedures to identify business enhancements and develop and implement strategies to maximise business improvement initiatives.
- Undertake research and identify issues on behalf of the Commissioner.
- Provide secretariat support as required, including when travelling with the Commissioner to the regions, ensuring effective corporate governance to meetings.
- Implement strategies and tactics to enhance operational service delivery in accordance with the QFES strategic plan.
- Facilitate organisational change initiatives and consultation processes to achieve the vision, goals and strategies of the QFES.
